Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Location: Johnson County Hospital, Tecumseh, Nebraska

Department: Surgery

Job Summary: Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Passes instruments, supplies and equipment in an appropriate manner.
  • Anticipates the surgeon's needs by watching the progress of the surgery and by knowing the steps of the procedure involved.
  • Maintains an orderly surgical field.
  • Assists surgeon when needed by retracting tissue, cutting sutures, sponging, suctioning blood from the wound and irrigating the wound.
  • Perform surgical counts with circulating nurse at appropriate times.
  • Identifies and cares for specimens received during surgery.
  • Orders and stocks supply and maintains a current inventory for the O.R. department.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies for the sterilization process.
  • Responsible for all cleaning duties within the surgical suite.
  • Assists in the transportation of the patients in and out of the operating room.
  • Will interpret, direct and evaluate policies and procedures of the perioperative area, recovery room, central service, and coordinate accordingly.
    • Policies and procedures will be reviewed and revised annually to reflect changes made.
    • Revised and deleted policies and procedures will be removed with one copy filed for reference.
  • Will provide input for yearly budget for surgical services, recovery room and central services.
  • Will interact with other departments in the hospital to interpret pre, peri, and post-operative nursing care and standards.
  • Will consistently monitor the surgery department for safety and comfort of the surgical clients and health care providers.

    • Care and disposition of surgical specimens
  • Maintain supply stock and performs outdate checks in the surgery suite, ER, and procedure room
  • Surgical techs or any unlicensed staff will not perform wound closure for the surgeons. This includes the use of skin adhesives used for skin closure. Surgical tech can staple if the surgeon is approximating the skin edges. "A physician cannot delegate to an unlicensed person." Surgical Techs are unlicensed.

Qualifications: Completion of surgical technology accredited program and certification required. Should demonstrate ability to anticipate needs, be flexible, and show an understanding of sterility concepts. CPR certification is required.
